2000 pontiac grand am owner manual

Rear-facing infant restraints are designed for infants of up to about 20 lbs. Some infant seats come in two parts -- the base stays secured in the vehicle and the seat part is removable. These forward-facing restraints are designed to help protect children who are from 20 to 40 lbs. One type, a convertible restraint, is designed to be used either as a rear-facing infant seat or a forward-facing child seat.

Booster seats with shields use lap-only belts; however, booster seats without shields use lap-shoulder belts. Booster seats can also help a child to see out the window. If it is, it will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Then follow the instructions for the restraint. You may find these instructions on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both. These restraints use the belt system in your vehicle, but the child also has to be secured within the restraint to help reduce the chance of personal injury. The instructions that come with the infant or child restraint will show you how to do that. Where to Put the Restraint Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat.

We at General Motors therefore recommend that you put your child restraint in the rear seat. Never put a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat.

This is because the back of the rear-facing child restraint would be very close to the inflating air bag. Always secure a rear-facing child restraint in a rear seat. You may secure a forward-facing child restraint in the right front seat, but before you do, always move the front passenger seat as far back as it will go. Wherever you install it, be sure to secure the child restraint properly.

Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can move around in a collision or sudden stop and injure people in the vehicle. Be sure to properly secure any child restraint in your vehicle -- even when no child is in it.

If your child restraint has a top strap, it should be anchored. If you need to have an anchor installed, your dealer can obtain a kit with anchor hardware and installation instructions specifically designed for this vehicle. The dealer can then install the anchor for you. This work will be done for you free of charge. Or, you may install the anchor yourself using the instructions provided in the kit.

See the earlier part about the top strap if the child restraint has one. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. Secure the child in the child restraint when and as the instructions say. Put the restraint on the seat. The child restraint instructions will show you how. Tilt the latch plate to adjust the belt if needed.

Buckle the belt. Make sure the release button is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to. To tighten the belt, pull up on the shoulder belt while you push down on the child restraint. Push and pull the child restraint in different directions to be sure it is secure.

The safety belt will move freely again and be ready to work for an adult or larger child passenger. Make the belt as long as possible by tilting the latch plate and pulling it along the belt. It will be ready to work for an adult or larger child passenger. To tighten the belt, pull its free end while you push down on the child restraint.

Never put a rear-facing child restraint in this seat. Always secure a rear-facing child restraint in the rear seat. Although a rear seat is a safer place, you can secure a forward-facing child restraint in the right front seat. Because your vehicle has a right front passenger air bag, always move the seat as far back as it will go before securing a forward-facing child restraint.

You may find it helpful to use your knee to push down on the child restraint as you tighten the belt. But they need to use the safety belts properly. If you have the choice, a child should sit next to a window so the child can wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide.

Here two children are wearing the same belt. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child.

If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. That could cause serious or fatal injuries. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you. The extender will be just for you, and just for the seat in your vehicle that you choose. To wear it, just attach it to the regular safety belt.

Checking Your Restraint Systems Now and then, make sure the safety belt reminder light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly.

Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired. Torn or frayed safety belts may not protect you in a crash. They can rip apart under impact forces. If a belt is torn or frayed, get a new one right away. Also look for any opened or broken air bag covers, and have them repaired or replaced.

After a very minor collision, nothing may be necessary. But if the belts were stretched, as they would be if worn during a more severe crash, then you need new belts.

If belts are cut or damaged, replace them. Collision damage also may mean you will need to have safety belt or seat parts repaired or replaced. See the part on the air bag system earlier in this section.

Also explained are the instrument panel and the warning systems that tell you if everything is working properly -- and what to do if you have a problem. A child or others could be badly injured or even killed.

They could operate power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. Each tag has a key code on it that tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys. Keep the tag in a safe place. If you need a new key, go to your dealer for the correct key code.

Remember to carry the pre-cut emergency key which Pontiac sends after delivery for vehicles sold in the United States. This tag may be removed by your dealer before it is delivered. Your vehicle has a number of new features that can help prevent theft, therefore you can have a lot of trouble getting into your vehicle if you ever lock your keys inside.

You may even have to damage your vehicle to get in. So be sure you have extra keys. Passengers -- especially children -- can easily open the doors and fall out. Outsiders can easily enter through an unlocked door when you slow down or stop your vehicle. Wear safety belts properly, lock your doors, and you will be far better off whenever you drive your vehicle.

From the inside, you can lock the door by pushing the locking lever forward. To unlock the door, push the locking lever rearward. Power Door Locks There are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle. From the outside, use your key or keyless entry system, if your vehicle has this option. With the power door locks, you can unlock or lock all of the doors of your vehicle from the driver or front passenger door lock switch. Push the top of the switch to unlock all of the doors.

Push the bottom of the switch to lock all the doors. If someone needs to get out while the vehicle is running, have that person use the manual or the power door lock.

Programmable Automatic Door Locks Programmable Automatic Door Locks is a standard feature intended to provide enhanced security and convenience by automatically locking and unlocking the doors. One of four operating modes may be selected and programmed by the driver: D Mode 1: All doors automatically lock when the D Mode 2: This mode is only available with the remote keyless entry transmitter.

No automatic door unlock. D Mode 4: No automatic door lock or unlock. The Programmable Automatic Door Locks will be in operating mode 1 when the vehicle is shipped from the factory.

Disconnecting the vehicle battery for up to one year will not change the programmed mode of the Programmable Automatic Door Locks. The doors will remain locked unless manually unlocked or the lock button is pressed. Press and hold LOCK on the power door lock switch for ten seconds. Count the number of chimes you hear. The number of chimes tells you which mode your vehicle is in.

You can change the mode by pressing and holding LOCK on the power door lock switch two chimes for mode 2, three chimes for mode 3 and four chimes for mode 4. If the driver opens another door before the seven seconds, the doors will not lock until seven seconds after the last door is closed. If the power door lock switch is pressed to LOCK twice when leaving the vehicle, the doors will immediately lock.

Rear Door Security Locks Your vehicle is equipped with rear door security locks that help prevent passengers from opening the rear doors of your vehicle from the inside.

Repeat Step 1 until you hear the number of chimes that matches the mode you want. The mode you selected is now set. Delayed Locking The Delayed Locking feature is standard and makes it easier to use your power door locks at any time either manually or with the power door lock switches.

When the driver leaves the vehicle and pushes the power door lock switch to LOCK, three chimes will be heard. The doors will not lock. The switch is located on the inside of the rear door.

To use the security locks: 1. Move the switch up. Close the door. Do the same thing on the other rear door. If you want to open a rear door when the security lock is on: 1. Unlock the door from the inside. Then open the door from the outside. You should let adults and older children know how these security locks work, and how to cancel the locks.

Anti-Lockout Protection Anti-Lockout Protection is a standard feature intended to provide enhanced security and convenience. This feature prevents a driver who has left the keys in the ignition from locking the doors, using the power door locks while any door is open. To override this feature, when the key is in the ignition and a door is open, hold the power door lock switch for three seconds.

Move the switch down. This feature cannot guarantee that you will never be locked out of your vehicle. Always remember to take your keys with you. Do the same for the other rear door.

Leaving Your Vehicle The rear doors will now work normally. If you are leaving your vehicle, open your door and set the locks from the inside, then get out and close the door. To cancel the rear door lock: 1. Unlock the door from the inside and open it from the outside. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1 this device may not cause harmful interference, and 2 this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1 this device may not cause interference, and 2 this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. Changes or modifications to this system by other than an authorized service facility could void authorization to use this equipment. At times you may notice a decrease in range.

This is normal for any remote keyless entry system. If the transmitter does not work or if you have to stand closer to your vehicle for the transmitter to work, try this: D Check to determine if battery replacement or resynchronization is necessary.

See the instructions that follow. D Check the distance. You may be too far from your vehicle. You may need to stand closer during rainy or snowy weather. D Check the location. Other vehicles or objects may be blocking the signal. Take a few steps to the left or right, hold the transmitter higher, and try again. The interior lamps will turn off after all of the doors are closed. The interior lamps will stay on for 10 seconds or until the ignition is turned on. Trunk Release: The trunk will unlock anytime when the vehicle symbol on the transmitter is pressed, the trunk lockout is not engaged and the gear selector is in PARK P or the parking brake is engaged.

The interior lamps will come on for 10 seconds or until the ignition switch is turned to ON. Horn Symbol: The horn will sound and the headlamps and taillamps will flash for up to one minute when the horn symbol on the transmitter is pressed.

This can be turned off by pressing the horn symbol button again or by turning the ignition to ON. Programmable Horn Chirp When you use the remote keyless entry transmitter to lock the doors or use the delayed locking feature the parking lamps will flash and the horn will chirp.

The programmable horn chirp can be disabled by pressing and holding either of the door lock switches in the unlock position for 10 seconds with the ignition ON and all of the doors closed. When you hear the horn chirp, programming is complete. To reactivate the horn chirp feature, repeat the above procedure. Matching Transmitter s To Your Vehicle Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle.

If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring any remaining transmitters with you when you go to your dealer. When the dealer matches the replacement transmitter to your vehicle, any remaining transmitters must also be matched. Once your dealer has coded the new transmitter, the lost transmitter will not unlock your vehicle.

Each vehicle can have only four transmitters matched to it. You can match your transmitter to as many General Motors vehicles as you own, as long as they have the same keyless entry system. Contact your dealer for assistance with this. Static from your body transferred to these surfaces may damage the transmitter. To replace the battery in the keyless entry transmitter: 1.

Use a small coin or flathead screwdriver to separate the bottom half from the top half of the transmitter. Remove the battery and replace it with the new one. Use one three-volt, CR, or equivalent, type battery.

Put the two halves back together. Resynchronize and then test the transmitter. The transmitter does not send the same signal twice to the receiver. The receiver will not respond to a signal that has been sent to it more that once. To resynchronize your transmitter and receiver, follow these directions: 1. Stand close to your vehicle. Hold the buttons for five seconds.

In this time, the doors should lock and unlock once. This confirms the resynchronization. If the doors do not lock and unlock, see your dealer for service. Trunk To unlock the trunk from the outside, insert the key and turn the trunk lock cylinder or use the remote keyless entry transmitter if equipped.

It can cause unconsciousness and even death. If you must drive with the trunk lid open or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between the body and the trunk lid: D Make sure all other windows are shut. That will force outside air into your vehicle. D If you have air outlets on or under the instrument panel, open them all the way. Push the remote release button to release the trunk lid. Make sure the trunk lockout feature is not activated.

Remote Trunk Release Lockout Your remote trunk release is equipped with a lockout feature to help prevent unauthorized entry into the trunk when the vehicle is left unattended. The switch is located on the inside of the trunk lid, mounted to the trunk lid latch. To turn the lockout off, slide the switch all the way to the right, to OFF. However, the trunk lid can still be opened with the key, but not with the keyless entry transmitter if equipped.

Although your vehicle has a number of theft-deterrent features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it impossible to steal. However, there are ways you can help. But what if you have to leave your key? Always do this. Your ignition and transaxle will be locked.

And remember to lock the doors. Parking at Night D If possible, park in a busy, well lit area. D Put your valuables in a storage area, like your trunk or glove box. Be sure to close and lock the storage area. D Close all windows. D Move the trunk release lockout switch to the ON position. D Lock the glove box. D If your vehicle has a remote keyless entry system, take the transmitter with you. Park in a lighted spot, close all windows and lock your vehicle. Remember to keep your valuables out of sight.

Put them in a storage area, or take them with you. Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock cylinder is tampered with, fuel is disabled. However, your Passlock system is not working properly and must be serviced by your dealer. Your vehicle is not protected by Passlock at this time. In Canada, call D Avoid making hard stops for the first miles km or so.

Hard stops with new linings can mean premature wear and earlier replacement. Follow this breaking-in guideline every time you get new brake linings.

A child or others could be injured or even killed. With the ignition key in the ignition switch, you can turn the switch to four positions. OFF A : Before you put the key into the ignition switch, the switch is off. It is the only position from which you can remove the key. This position locks your ignition and transaxle.

It also lets you use things like the radio and windshield wipers when the engine is not running. To use ACC, turn the key clockwise. Use this position if your vehicle must be pushed or towed, but never try to push-start your vehicle. ON C : This position is where the key returns after you start your engine and release the switch.

The switch stays in ON when the engine is running. But even when the engine is not running, you can use ON to operate your electrical power accessories and to display some instrument panel warning lights.

When the engine starts, release the key. The ignition switch will return to ON for normal driving. Turn the key only with your hand. Using a tool to force it could break the key or the ignition switch. If none of this works, then your vehicle needs service. If you do, you could damage the transaxle. When the engine starts, let go of the key. The idle speed will go down as your engine warms up. And the excessive heat can damage your starter motor. Wait about 15 seconds between each try to help avoid draining your battery or damaging your starter.

Do this until the engine starts. As soon as it does, let go of the key. Try pushing your accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and holding it there as you hold the key in START for a maximum of 15 seconds. This clears the extra gasoline from the engine. When the engine starts, release the key and the accelerator pedal.

If you add electrical parts or accessories, you could change the way the engine operates. Before adding electrical equipment, check with your dealer. If you ever have to have your vehicle towed, see the part of this manual that tells how to do it without damaging your vehicle. Starting Your V6 Engine 1. The idle speed will go down as your engine gets warm. Then push your accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. Hold it there. When the engine starts, let go of the key and the accelerator pedal.

Turn off the engine. Open the hood and unwrap the electrical cord. On the 2. Plug it into a normal, grounded volt AC outlet. An air bag is designed to inflate in a moderate to severe frontal or near frontal crash. Page 40 What will you see after an air bag inflates? After an air bag inflates, it quickly deflates, so quickly that some people may not even realize the air bag inflated. Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts.

To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt. Page Children Children Everyone in a vehicle needs protection!

That includes infants and all children smaller than adult size. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle. Page Child Restraints Child Restraints Every time infants and young children ride in vehicles, they should have protection provided by appropriate restraints.

What are the different types of add child restraints? Page 52 A rear facing infant restraint B positions an infant to face the rear of the vehicle. Rear facing infant restraints are designed for infants of up to about 20 lbs.

Page 53 A forward facing child restraint C E positions a child upright to face forward in the vehicle. These forward facing restraints are designed to help protect children who are from 20 to 40 lbs.
